A command like tcpdump tcp port 3306 should work. The response was sent by the server at 213. Since the script is connecting locally, the login will work. What I want to do is be able to connect to it from the outside.

I'll post my files and see if you all can figure out what's wrong. Hi everyone, I'm sure this is simple, but I'm throwing my hands up in the air after testing various options and searching for an answer on the forum. I enter in all the information is asks: Hostname: mysite. It turns-out that as the problem db connect file resides in an additional folder 'backend' off the root directory then the database-server name is actually different than the 'frontend' db connect that I was using.

Solving “Unknown MySQL server host” in AWS RDS

It duly created the my. I'm curious though why mysqld-opt is the chosen server, and not mysqld as in the manual. Do you know the difference. I'll now try working with a database. By pressed Ctrl-Alt-Del I can confirm that mysqld is in the task list. I then tried to close the server, using mysqladmin -u root shutdown. Check that mysqld is running on localhost and that the port is 3306'. If I type 'telnet localhost 3306' I get the message box titled 'Connect Failed'. I don't have any my. None was created by the setup program. Can anybody suggest what I have done wrong, or what I have failed to do or set. Thanks if you can help.

I am able to connect to it using the command mysql -u root -p password I've been looking online and cannot find a solution that has worked. Well I made some progress. I managed to mess something up somewhere along the line. Restart the Server then you have access from outside. I don't fully understand why that is the case but hopefully this resolution will help the next person stuck with the same issue. Change it back to localhost and it stops again. I am new to databases and I have been asked to look at a few tables and see how many records they have and some other information. Check that mysqld is running on localhost and that the port is 3306'. Logging in as root from localhost is not the same as logging in as root from myothercoolserver. I am not sure which one to use.
